The 40-Hour HAZWOPER training isn’t a one time proposition. To maintain quality and ensure technicians are up-to-date on changing best practices and regulations, OSHA requires annual refresher training for HAZWOPER mandated workers. For convenience, Staycertified.co offers 40-Hour HAZWOPER training , 24 Hour HAZWOPER, and 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher training.
What is 40 Hour HAZWOPER training?
The 40-hour HAZWOPER training is required for compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA’s) 29 CFR 1910.120(e) (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) regulations and is the initial certification training for individuals who work in areas defined as HAZWOPER work sites.
Workers who will be exposed to hazardous substances at or above the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) during remediation of a contaminated site also require this training.
To quote OSHA: “General site workers (such as equipment operators, general laborers and supervisory personnel) engaged in hazardous substance removal or other activities which expose or potentially expose workers to hazardous substances and health hazards shall receive a minimum of 40 hours of instruction off the site, and a minimum of three days actual field experience under the direct supervision of a trained experienced supervisor.”
Key topics covered in the 40 Hour HAZWOPER training include hazardous substances and materials, workplace risks, and toxicology as well as site safety and health plans and job hazard analysis, cleanup operations and Bloodborne Pathogens.
There are actually several different HAZWOPER courses, for more information on the HAZWOPER refresher training, click here.
How Long is 40-Hour HAZWOPER Certification Valid?
Your 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is valid for 12 months following the completion of the course. Failing to renew by taking the 8 hour refresher course in time may result in you having to take the 40-hour HAZWOPER training again as you will no longer be HAZWOPER certified.
How do I Renew HAZWOPER Certification?
The HAZWOPER refresher course isn’t as long as the original 40-hour certification. All workers who work with hazardous materials need to take the 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher within 12 months of their previous HAZWOPER training to stay compliant. The 8-hour refresher course must be repeated every year to maintain your certification. There is no requirement to take the 8 hour refresher with the same training provider that you obtained the original 40 hour certificate from, you are free to choose any online training provider.
